Asthma Hospitalization

Preventable hospitalizations are those where timely and effective ambulatory care can prevent the onset of an illness or condition, control an acute episode of an illness, or manage a chronic disease or condition so that hospitalization is unnecessary. Asthma hospitalizations are preventable because people with asthma can stay out of the hospital if their disease is managed well.

  • There are about 15,945 hospitalizations each year in Michigan.

  • The rate of asthma hospitalization is 16.0 hospital stays per 10,000 people.

  • Asthma hospitalization rates are higher among females than males.

  • The rate of hospitalizations for blacks is 4 times higher than that for whites.

  • Children 0 to 4 years have the highest asthma hospitalization rate compared to other age groups.

  • Young adults 15 to 34 years have the lowest asthma hospitalization rate compared to other age groups.

  • The rate of hospitalizations for people living in poor areas is 4 times higher than for those living in areas with the most money.

  • Asthma hospitalization rates vary by county of residence. For information about asthma hospitalizations for people living in a specific county, click here
