Asthma Hospitalization


Preventable hospitalizations are those where timely and effective ambulatory care can prevent the onset of an illness or condition, control an acute episode of an illness, or manage a chronic disease or condition so that hospitalization is unnecessary. Asthma hospitalizations are preventable because people with asthma can stay out of the hospital if their disease is managed well.

  • There are about 16,743 hospitalizations each year in Michigan. [1]

  • The rate of asthma hospitalization is 16.6 hospital stays per 10,000 people. [1]

  • Asthma hospitalization rates are higher among females than males. [1]

  • The rate of hospitalizations for blacks is 4 times higher than that for whites. [1]

  • Children 0 to 4 years have the highest asthma hospitalization rate compared to other age groups. [1]

  • Young adults 15 to 34 years have the lowest asthma hospitalization rate compared to other age groups. [1]
